At Vistafolia, some clients arrive with a fully formed vision. Others come to us with a challenge and a blank canvas, happy to let our design team lead the way. Either way, watching a bespoke green wall take shape from an early conversation into a finished space is one of the most satisfying parts of what we do.
This particular project started with a challenge: a narrow stairway that needed a lift of colour and life, in a location that made real planting all but impossible. The client was based in Laguna Beach, California, where scorching sun and high humidity make it a genuinely difficult environment for living plants to survive, let alone thrive, on a tight, shaded stairwell. That’s exactly the kind of setting where a bespoke green wall earns its keep: no watering schedule, no risk of dieback, and a five-year warranty standing behind it regardless of the weather outside.
Designed and installed by our partners at Upscapers, the brief was to create something that felt considered rather than simply green. We drew from our Colour and Texture Boxes to build a palette of rich purples, delicate pinks and pristine whites, positioning each shade deliberately rather than scattering colour at random. The result reads less like a single plant wall and more like a designed piece, built specifically to fit the proportions of a narrow stairway rather than a generic panel size.
Getting this right matters more in a tight space like a stairwell than it does on a large open wall. With less surface area to work with, every colour placement is more visible, and small inconsistencies would be far more noticeable. A bespoke approach means the design can be planned around the exact dimensions of the space, rather than the space being made to fit a standard panel.
To add depth, our team introduced trailing foliage from our Trailing Buxus box, layered to cast the kind of natural, slightly irregular shapes you’d expect from a living wall that’s been growing for years. That trailing detail does a lot of work here: it breaks up the flatness that can make an artificial wall look too uniform, and it gives the eye something to follow as you move up or down the stairs, rather than a static block of colour.
A stock panel size would have meant either awkward gaps or unnecessary trimming on a stairway this narrow. Working with Upscapers on a bespoke design meant the wall could be measured and planned around the exact stairwell dimensions from the outset, rather than adapted after the fact. It’s a good example of when a made-to-measure approach isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s genuinely the only way to get a clean result in an unusual space.
Climate was just as important a factor here as the shape of the space. Laguna Beach’s combination of intense sun and coastal humidity is a difficult pairing for most living plants, which need consistent watering and shade to avoid scorching or wilting. A bespoke green wall sidesteps that problem entirely: the colours and textures chosen for this stairway will look the same in five years as they did on day one, regardless of how many heatwaves the coast sees in between.
This project is a good example of what a bespoke green wall can do when the space itself is the challenge. Every project we take on, from a single stairwell to a full building façade, starts from the same place: understanding the space first, then designing around it rather than forcing a standard solution to fit.
If you’ve got a space that a standard panel wouldn’t suit, whether that’s an unusual shape, a tricky climate, or simply a vision you haven’t seen done before, get in touch with our team to talk through what’s possible. You can also browse more transformations like this one in our case studies.
